About The Student Operated Press
Students Speak Out

The Student Operated Press gave me a chance to explore the journalism field and strengthen my writing skills. Like a child wanting to learn how to walk, I realized the SOP was like a parent. The organization guided me through the challenges of pursuing my career as a journalist by helping me recognize my weaknesses so that I could improve them.

As a newborn in the communication world, I used my senses to observe the journalism field. The SOP allowed me to grab my passion and take every little step to fulfill my dream. After starting my internship and officially becoming a member of the SOP, I decided to use my eyes to observe and read other publications so I could enhance my writing skills. I also had a chance to hear and listen to Judy and other professionals about their personal experience in the field, which gave me the ability to appreciate the hard work and effort it takes to accomplish a dream.

During my internship, I also tried to stand on my own by using my past writing experiences and journalism courses to expose my work. But the SOP provided me with the best opportunities to build my strength. I had the chance to conduct interviews as well as freelance for the Local Buzz magazine. Like a parent, the SOP was there to answer any questions I had whenever I was unsure about my writing.

Even though I was confident in my work and passion, sometimes I would fall and I would also struggle to stand up. During my growth, I was confronted with deadlines. I found myself having to edit and rewrite my work, but this helped me understand the importance of providing the public with credible and trustworthy information. After falling and getting back up, I realized that practice makes perfect and that is exactly what the SOP gave me. The organization gave me the best opportunity to practice my writing skills so I could become a better communicator.

My internship with the Student Operated Press has been a great experience and it has given me the chance to value the production of news.

The group allowed me to understand the true meaning of news and the importance of journalism. As a communication source, I plan to continue to provide the community with newsworthy information. The SOP gave me a chance to stand and walk by myself. And as I continue to run, I plan to chase my dreams and become a successful journalist.
