About The Student Operated Press
Students Speak Out
Matthew Kent

It is hard to fathom why I love journalism so much. But one thing is certain: my experience with the Student Operated Press has been one that I would classify as enjoyable. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first started writing for the Web site, but then became more interested in becoming a better writer. My passion has always been journalism for several reasons.

First, I believe there is no better career suited for someone like myself and being allowed to go out and interact with the public on a daily basis. I realize that no one is perfect and have quickly learned this along the way that editors will not always agree with your story that you write. The Student Operated Press is particularly of importance to me because we live in a changing world of journalism. Online media is where the future is headed, so I feel that the SOP has guided me in the right direction. I also feel that the ability to work with writers from across the globe is prestigious and I feel very honored and proud to work with such a great team of people. It is only fitting that I must say the SOP has given me more confidence in my ability not only as a writer, but as an editor.

Despite a few bumps along the way, I am quickly learning that the Student Operated Press has granted myself an opportunity to showcase my talent as a student journalist. Having written for two college newspapers and various other publications, I strongly feel the SOP has allowed students like myself to further themselves in the world of journalism by writing for Florida publications. I have always been committed to accuracy, fairness and the truth. I think that the SOP has opened doors for novice writers, as well as the opportunity for potential job seekers that may be looking for a career in journalism.

In my opinion, it is only fitting that I must say that The Student Operated Press provides a hands-on approach that cannot be taught inside a classroom. For me personally, it has provided me a new outlet to expose my craft of journalism to a number of individuals on the Internet. It has also taught me to work quickly and efficiently in order to get a news story online.

I certainly hope I can continue assisting other writers, as well as receiving advice from the wonderful staff at the Student Operated Press. I want to especially thank Judyth Piazza and Leon for their guidance at this time. More importantly, I want to extend my gratitude for their understanding that balancing school and writing for the SOP has been a challenge for me at times, but somehow, I’ve gotten through it. I am especially grateful for the opportunities that have been given to me and hope I can continue working for a great group of people. Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

Matthew Kent
