I am a rising senior at Georgetown University studying international politics and Muslim-Christian relations. After studying journalism with bestselling author and Washington Post investigative business reporter Alec Klein, I am now spending the summer interning with the Washington Post Express. In addition, I am a professionally published and award-winning editorial cartooninst and illustrator.
I've worked with legislatures and government at all levels, and its a subject of interest in my writing. Before transferring to Georgetown, I served as the student government president of the 90 percent minority, 30,000-strong Prince George's Community College. I championed the cause of educational funding there, winning an additional $3.5 million for the campus during my tenure. At Georgetown, I've continued my involvement, being elected as vice president, and leading a student coalition to sucessfully preserve the Perkins Loan Program from Congressional cuts.
My goal is to become a reporter like my father, and to return the craft from the efete and lazy Jayson Blair class of modern journalism school grads. After retiring as a three-time Pulitzer Prize nominee, my dad steeped my childhood in the mythos of the reporter as the dogged defender of Truth. And since I inherited his talent for being lousy at anything but writing, I don't really have much choice.
I'm now working with some Lebanese contacts to establish a bureau service for Middle Eastern papers who don't have Washington presence. After I have established my writing talent domestically and abroad, I will pry my way into the rarified inner sanctums of the Washington Post as a foreign correspondent.
I would like to provide the Student Operated Press with news and feature articles along the college and Beltway-area beats. I just completed a major investigation into the state of the black community on Georgetown's campus. I am well-versed to cover Congressional issues; education issues; local Washington happenings; art, music, book, and movie reviews; generational and cultural trends here and abroad; and economic, geopolitical, energy, religious, cultural and environmental subjects. If you are interested, I can also pen editorial cartoons.
