My name is Jennifer and I am a Sacred Heart University alumna. I hold a B.A. in English and a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree.

My six years of education experience includes teaching seventh grade students English/Language Arts in Connecticut. I love working with my students, and witnessing their progress, as I implement explicit strategies to improve reading comprehension. Every student`s experience is enhanced and customized by differentiating lessons for learning styles, IEPs, 504s, academically talented abilities, as well as cultural and socioeconomic needs. I am the founder and facilitator of a Journalism Competition and a Technologically Modified Flipped Classroom. The opportunity to provide each student with a video newscast and access to technology platforms established a sense of pride, purpose, and accountability. These are all valuable aspects in academic achievement. I also have experience teaching tenth grade English for Adult Education at a High School Credit Diploma Program in CT.

Interest in journalism developed through my experience with public speaking competitions. After a speech, audience members would tell me that they did not know about a particular issue and that they will make different decisions in the future. This is what really attracted me to the field.  The fact that through communication one can bring information to individuals to help their lives in a positive manner is astounding. I am passionate about combining my interest in journalism with my desire to make a difference.

I enjoy writing about education, environmental policy, current events, travel, food, music, and design. In addition, I lend fellow writers assistance with idea conceptualization, and developmental editing, substantive editing, copyediting, and proofreading.

Below is a list of my public speaking competitions:

2001 First Place District Prepared Public Speaking
2001 CT State Prepared Public Speaking Third Place
2002 First Place District Prepared Public Speaking
2002 CT State Prepared Public Speaking First Place
2002 National Prepared Public Speaking Bronze Emblem
2003 First Place District Extemporaneous Public Speaking
2003 CT State Extemporaneous Public Speaking First Place
2003 National Extemporaneous Public Speaking Silver Emblem
