College: Columbia College

Major:  Journalism

My name is Jessica Morrical.  I graduated high school in 2005 from a small Indiana town and recently relocated to Cocoa, Florida. I have had several creative writing samples and articles published in the LakeVille Lunar, a local publication in my hometown of LakeVille, Indiana.  . Soon after graduation, I was accepted to the prestigious Columbia College of Chicago with the intended major of journalism. Unfortunately, due to inadequate finances I was unable to enroll.
I have a strong passion for art and literature that far surpasses my means of wealth. It's my belief that teenagers today, those who don’t excel in academics or athletics, are letting go of all of their creative energy (that they feel will never get them anywhere) and turning to drugs and destruction.  I've seen it all around me.
I’m longing for the oil to keep my flame burning and I feel that I’ve found it in this opportunity at the Student Operated Press.  I wish to tackle the angst and depression that is plaguing the youth of today.  I’m afraid, not only for myself, but for my entire generation
My goal is to show those teens that although their future may seem blue collar and bleak, that creative energy will not go unnoticed.  I stumbled upon the S.O.P. and thought: “This is what I’ve been looking for!” I want to write what I am most passionate about: art, music, and literature.
