Armless Pianist Wins China's Got Talent! Freak Show?

By Robert Paul Reyes

"An armless pianist who plays with his toes has won the first series of China`s version of the internationally popular television talent show, `China`s Got Talent.`

Liu Wei, 23, who lost both his arms aged 10 when he was electrocuted during a game of hide-and-seek, defeated 7-year-old standup comedian Zhang Fengxi at the final on Sunday at the Shanghai Stadium, the Shanghai Daily reported." Reuters

Most folks may see this as an inspiring and heartwarming story, but an armless pianist shouldn`t be allowed to compete in a TV talent show.

Many of the contestants on "China`s Got Talent" waited for years for their big break, they must have been devastated when they lost to an armless piano player.

The producers of "China`s Got Talent" are exploiting the armless entertainer for ratings and profits. Wei`s inclusion in the popular talent show is a mockery and a slap on the face to the other contestants.

If "American Idol" featured an armless singer, there would be howls of protests. "American Idol" is going to be freaky enough with Jennifer Lopez; we don`t need any sideshow acts on the show.

Disabled performers should be allowed to show off their skills, but not on a TV show where they will be exploited.
