Is Homer Simpson A Catholic?

By Robert Paul Reyes

"`The Simpsons` just got a blessing from the Vatican.

The official Vatican newspaper has declared that beer-swilling, doughnut-loving Homer Simpson and son Bart are Catholics -- and what`s more, it says that parents should not be afraid to let their children watch `the adventures of the little guys in yellow.`

But executive producer Al Jean told Entertainment Weekly on Monday he was in `shock and awe` at the latest assertion, adding that the Simpsons attend the `Presbylutheran` First Church of Springfield.

`We`ve pretty clearly shown that Homer is not Catholic,` Jean said. "I really don`t think he could go without eating meat on Fridays -- for even an hour." Reuters

In one episode Homer may have converted to Catholicism, but it`s quite clear that Homer and Bart are nominal Protestants.

Homer is a typical American Christian, he attends church on most Sundays to keep up appearances, but he dreads the boring sermons of his pastor, and religion has absolutely no impact in his daily life.

By declaring that Homer and Bart are Catholics the Vatican is asserting the supremacy of pop culture over organized religion. The Vatican realizes that they are fighting a losing battle over the lure of pop culture, and the Catholic top honchos figure that Homer`s alleged endorsement of the Roman Catholic Church is a big selling point.

Most folks who attend a church would be hard pressed to explain or even remember Sunday`s sermon. But most fans of the Simpsons will remember a couple of the jokes and the plot of the last episode they watched.

My forte is pop culture and I would bet my house that even the most devout "people of faith" enjoy my irreverent and sacrilegious essays a hell of a lot more than they enjoy attending church.

The church simply can`t compete against pop culture; one episode of "The Simpsons" is more entertaining, informative and uplifting than a hundred sermons.

The Roman Catholic Church must be desperate if it claims the devious, lazy, and untalented Simpsons as members of their church.

Homer Simpson isn`t a Catholic; he`s as religious as a well-worn copy of Hustler magazine.
