Somali Pirates Free Elderly British Couple! Huge Ransom Paid!

By Robert Paul Reyes

A British couple who had been kidnapped by Somali pirates and held in captivity in a remote, swelteringly hot patch of central Somalia for more than a year were finally released, Somali officials said Sunday.

The couple, Paul and Rachel Chandler, were hijacked at sea in October 2009 while sailing in a small yacht in the Indian Ocean in a trip they described to friends as "the trip of a lifetime.`

British media reports indicated that a ransom of several hundred thousand dollars had been paid " "

The New York Times

It`s a miracle that the elderly couple survived their harrowing ordeal, and we are thrilled that they will be spending the holidays with friends and family.

According to media reports a ransom of $750,000 was paid, and some pundits are complaining that we shouldn`t negotiate with terrorists. I wouldn`t characterize the Somali pirates with terrorists, they are in it for the money and they almost never kill any of their hostages.

However, there is no doubt that every time a ransom is paid for the release of a hostage, it emboldens the pirates and leads to more innocent persons being kidnapped.

I don`t want to give the impression that these pirates are benevolent tyrants -- they physically abused the Chandlers and kept them locked up separately for months.

We know where the pirates live, we should bomb their enclave to smithereens. But that won`t happen as long as Obama is president, he probably wants to invite them to the White House for a beer summit.
