A Prayer for the Infidel

A Prayer for the Infidel

By Ed Roberts

A Prayer for the Infidel

I am the infidel

The non-believer

The one you despise

The one you hate

But you pray for me

Please understand

I am a man of faith

I do pray

Often

I try and live my life

In a way to try and benefit

All those around me

But to you

I am the infidel

The one you despise

The one you hate

But you pray for me

I`ve seen you

Those who worship with you

I have heard your prayers

But I also have seen things

Things that you would rather stay hidden

You prayed for peace

But sent money to those

Those who would buy guns and weapons

Weapons often layed in the arms of children

Weapons to kill the innocent

And other infidels

Like me

I`ve heard you

From your pulpit

Ask for forgiveness

But I`ve seen the bruises

That you left upon your wife`s face

When you felt

She didn`t obey her husband

I`ve seen the marks

You left upon your children as well

I`ve heard the speeches

Asking for peace in the Middle East

But still you preach exclusion

And bulldoze neighborhoods

To build settlements

Upon land you feel you rightly own

I`ve listened to so many prayers

Asking for money

To enlarge a cathedral

Build a gymnasium

Or a swimming pool

I`ve tried to remind you

It is not dollar signs

That are a sign of faith

But still you do not listen

For I am the infidel

The non-believer

The one you hate

And pray for

So that somehow I might become

One of you

Yes

To you I may be an infidel

But I am a man of faith

I understand my place

And my purpose

And tonight

I hope you understand

Why this man

The one you consider the infidel

Prays for you
