Christians And Atheists Engage In Billboard War
"Drivers heading into and out of New York through the Lincoln Tunnel now get an atheist billboard on the New Jersey side and a Christian one in Manhattan.
Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League, told CNN his group`s sign is a `counterpunch` to the Christmas message from American Atheists. He said David Silverman, president of the atheists group, is "denigrating" religion.
The American Atheists ad features a nativity scene with a simple message: `You know it`s a myth. This season celebrate reason.`
At the Manhattan end, drivers read: `You know it`s real. This season celebrate Jesus.`"
These dueling signs exemplify the freedom of expression that we enjoy in our great democracy. If a citizen of Saudi Arabia put up a poster that read, "The Koran is a collection of myths and fables", he would be beheaded.
I`m glad both signs are up, let commuters decide which sign bears witness to the truth. A person filled with the Christmas spirit will thank God for both proclamations, because they bear witness to the vibrancy of our democracy.
Both signs are in good taste, nobody should get his panties in a twist over either billboard.
