Senator Joe Manchin: Sir, You Are A Coward!
Senator Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) announced that he had prostate cancer late last week. He delayed surgery until this week so he could cast his vote repealing DADT. Wyden put his responsibilities as a senator ahead of his personal considerations, and that`s as it should be.
Thanks to Senator Wyden and 64 other senators, gays and lesbians will soon be able to serve in the military openly. This is a great moment in history not only for homosexuals, bur for every American who values freedom, liberty and equality.
Sen. Wyden is a statesman who takes his oath of office seriously, and then there`s newly minted Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia who was a no-show in the Senate on Saturday for the historic vote.
Why did Manchin miss such a crucial vote? Was he on his death bed? Did he have to attend the funeral of his wife? Was his son in a car accident? Not exactly -- he had to attend a family Christmas party. Manchin was elected to serve the best interests of his state and his country; it follows that he should put the responsibilities of his powerful position ahead his petty personal concerns.
I have supported the right of gays and lesbians to serve in the military openly and with pride before DADT. Even though Machin would have voted to preserve DADT, I am outraged that he shirked the responsibilities of his office.
Manchin is a coward, and I hope the good citizens of West Virgina won`t re-elect him.
