Breaking News: Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak May Step Down Tonight

"Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak may be preparing to announce his departure in the next few hours, according to various media reports Thursday.


The head of Egypt`s ruling party says he expects President Mubarak to respond to all the protester`s demands. Mubarak could "respond to the people`s demands by Friday," the secretary general of his ruling National Democratic Party Hossam Badrawi told the BBC.

The higher council of the armed forces held a meeting all day Thursday, and was expected to make a statement later. AFP quoted an Egyptian officer who said: "We are awaiting orders that will make the people happy."

The cable news networks are providing saturation coverage of the unrest in Egypt after news broke out that Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak may step down as early as tonight. 

Just a couple of days ago it seemed that Mubarark was safely ensconced in the presidential palace until September. But as the demonstrations continue to grow in size, and his allies treat him like a leper, the army may have stepped in and told him that it was time to go.
