Feral Chickens Running Wild In New Orleans

By Robert Paul Reyes

"Residents of New Orleans say the city`s population of wild chickens has boomed in the years since Hurricane Katrina.

The residents said the chickens are believed to be descended from ones that escaped from backyard coops during and after the 2005 storm, The (New Orleans) Times-Picayune reported Tuesday.

The spokeswoman said the feral chickens are left with a farmer known as the `Chicken Man.` She said capturing the birds is `extremely hard` and usually requires multiple officers."

The feral chickens add to the charm of New Orleans, and the city shouldn`t devote its limited financial resources to round them up. The chickens don`t pose a health risk, and they don`t attack pets or people.

Katrina didn`t wash away the endemic violence and corruption of the Big Easy, the focus should be on fighting crime, not on catching chickens.

The officers, not clear from the UPI article if they are animal control officers or regular cops, should be protecting the citizens from wild dogs and even wilder criminals.

It`s also not clear what the Chicken Man does with the feral chickens; I wouldn`t be surprised if he eats chicken for lunch and dinner every day.
