Scotty McCreery on his American Idol Win

By Paulette Cohn

The American Idol competition was neck-in-neck between Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery on Tuesday night`s last performance show, but when it came down to the final vote, the hunky 17-year-old country crooner from Garner, NC emerged victorious -- continuing the male run of winners in the talent competition.

"My thought was [Lauren] wrapped it up when she sang that final song Like My Mother Does," Scotty admitted to reporters the morning after his win. "I was more than nervous, but it worked out in my favor."

And speaking of Lauren, who planted a big wet one on Scotty as he celebrated his victory, he says, "She told me before the show she would do that as a joke. I met her day one of Hollywood week. We were schoolmates through this whole thing. It is more like the brother/sister thing."

Scotty, whose music influences include Elvis, Conway Twitty, Johnny Cash and Hank Williams, recorded two songs prior to the finale. The producers chose I Love You This Much as his first single, which is already in the Top 5 on the iTunes charts, and the new Idol says he took to it immediately on hearing it.

"The song is a great song to start off with. When they pitched it to me, I fell in love with it. I am excited about the other one, too," he says, but declines to name it. "I am excited about the album. It is about getting good songs. You need to have an album the fans want to hear."

Just prior to taking the American Idol stage on Wednesday night, Scotty tweeted:  "Man, it feels like just yesterday I was up in Milwaukee, butterflies flying, about to sing Baby Lock Them Doors for the judges."

Now his life has done a 180 with fame and fortune knocking at the door. Scotty next will head out on the American Idol Live 2011 Tour, and he may also pop up at the CMA Music Fest in Nashville next month.

After all as he says, "Country music is what I grew up with. It is what I love to do. I wasn`t going to change it."
