Judyth Piazza chats with Linda Higdon, President and Founder of The Global Room for Women

By Judyth Piazza CEO (Editor)

Linda Higdon is a champion for the power of women`s global connections, dialogue, and engagement. From 2005 " 2009, she was Partnership Director for Peace X Peace in Washington, D.C. and facilitated hundreds of new, personal connections between women in the United Sates and women of Africa, the Middle East, South America, and India.

She created many organizational relationships to introduce American women to the opportunity to connect globally. These organizations include the YWCA, Leading Women of Africa, Presbyterian Women USA, International Women`s Democracy Center, International Women`s Peace Conference, International Nursing Network on Sexual Violence Against Women, Church Women United, World Bank`s Pangea Market, Gather the Women, US Social Forum and many more.

In 2007, Linda wanted to provide U.S. women with the meaningful experience of talking directly with and learning alongside women from developing and war-torn countries. She designed The Women`s Global Roundtable, " where through live teleconference calls she would interview a different woman from a different country every week, broadcasting the calls to U.S. women. In 2008, she re-formatted the program to partner with the United Nations Fund for Women, featuring guests who were grant recipients of the United Nations Trust Fund " women working on the frontlines around the world on sexual violence against women. The intention of these calls was to provide a platform whereby one woman would not only share her work, new models and approaches, but also her personal life experiences and story. For many U.S. women in the audience, this was their first experience talking to a woman from that particular region of the world.

Linda`s inspiration and reason for creating the Global Room for Women began 10 years ago, when she traveled to developing countries and was a first-hand witness to the lives of women living in searing poverty, particularly in the slums of Nairobi, Kenya and Cameroon, South Africa, India, and Nepal. In addition, while working in Washington, D.C., she had the great fortune to form many professional and personal relationships with women from over 30 countries " women working on women`s human rights, peace-building, micro-lending, violence against girls and women, education of girls and women, AIDS, poverty, and many other global issues facing women. It is within this rich context that she identified a need expressed by women of almost all cultures: They were seeking a place where they could meet one another directly and personally to understand what they have in common and how they might support one another.

Linda is a Trustee of Ripples International in Meru, Kenya, an AIDS relief operation reaching over 13,000 children impacted by AIDS. From its inception, she has worked closely with founder Mercy Chidi and her husband, Chidi Ogbonna, to open opportunities for funding and resources.

Linda lives in southern Wisconsin with her best friend and husband, Paul. She has two beautiful step-sons, Lars and Nils. She is also a very proud aunt of Brittany, Isaac, Amy, Ashley, and Brooke, who are already making a difference in the world in their young adult lives.
