The controversial words "under God" were not in the original pledge from 1892 and were not added until 1954.The 1950`s were a time of paranoia over communism, and the divisive phrase was added to the pledge to distinguish America from the "godless" Soviets.
It`s an affront to the ideals of inclusiveness and democracy for such a belligerent phrase to be a part of the Pledge of Allegiance. NBC did the right thing by omitting the religious words from the pledge of a secular nation. Would to God that Congress would do the right thing and delete the offensive words from the Pledge of Allegiance.
Patriotism and religion are a combustible mix, true patriots should be outraged that this incendiary phrase is part of the pledge.
Shame on NBC for caving in to criticism and issuing an apology!
