Derek Jeter, Mr. 3000!

Derek Jeter, Mr. 3000!

By Michael Weidenhamer

New Yorkers now have 3,000 reasons to love Derek Jeter. On Saturday, Jeter became the 28th person in Major League Baseball history to have 3,000 hits and the first person to do it while playing his whole career with the Yankees.

Jeter, from Kalamazoo, Michigan, is the captain of the Yankees and is one of the greatest baseball players of all time. He has led New York to five World Series championships in the last 15 years.

Jeter started the game with 2,998 hits. In his first at-bat, he hit a double and the day looked promising. All he needed was one more hit for 3,000. He could have done it in any way. Another double, a simple single, a thrilling triple. Instead, being the stylish guy he is, he hit a home run in the third inning right into the stands. He and Wade Boggs are the only two players to get their 3,000th hit with a home run.

Jeter`s work and play for the day weren`t done with that home run, though. He had three more hits, all singles, including the game winning hit towards the end of the game. His performance on Saturday was so spectacular that even he was in disbelief. If I`d written this script and handed it to someone, " he said, I still wouldn`t have bought it. "
