CV Smith, Author of Nettie Parker`s Backyard, Gives Presentation at Sam Johnson`s Book Shop

Inspiring themes of anti-bullying and tolerance in a war-time story for children, complete with mystery, adventure and the supernatural

Mar Vista, CA.- Sunday, August 14, 2011. CV Smith will give a presentation of her new book, Nettie Parker`s Backyard at Sam Johnson`s book store (12310 Venice Blvd., Mar Vista; 310-391-5047) on Sunday, August 14 at 2:00p.m. About her WWII historical-fiction mystery, Smith says, "I wrote this novel hoping to illustrate to children that bullying and intolerance toward race, religion, or the physically challenged have no place in our world. Certainly, with tools such as the internet, facebook, twitter, etc., the world is becoming smaller in many ways, and so the ill-effects of prejudice are felt even more strongly today than in the past."

Nettie Parker`s Backyard is about a mystical, wonderful African-American Gullah woman and the supernatural signs she receives, which guide her to care for eight Jewish refugee children in WWII London. The special bonds they form are so strong, nothing can break them: neither time nor distance, proving love is the greatest force of all. The novel has wide appeal and contains something with which every 4th-7th grader can identify.

"I have been an educator for over 30 years with the Los Angeles Unified School District, and I`ve seen first-hand the effects bullying and prejudice can have on a child," relates Smith. "The books I have written hopefully force my readers to think about important topics in a more global and sophisticated manner."

Nettie Parker`s Backyard is available in both ebook and paperback, at both Amazon and Barnes & Noble by Avid Readers Publishing Group.
