Outrage: Oprah Winfrey To Receive Honorary Oscar

By Robert Paul Reyes

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is going to give Oprah Winfrey the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian award at the annual Governors Awards on Nov. 12.

This is an outrage and an insult to the legions of talented thespians who were never honored with an Oscar. Oprah ruled daytime TV from 1986 to 2011, her talk show was influential, culturally significant and it left an indelible mark on our society. Oprah was nominated for an Oscar and she produced a few movies, but acting is little more than a hobby for her.

Nobody would dispute that Oprah is a humanitarian, thousands of people all over the world have benefited from her generosity. Oprah`s philanthropic efforts haven`t gone unnoticed, she has received many awards from civic and religious organizations.

I don`t care if Oprah discovers a cure for cancer, that has nothing to do with the world of movies, and she doesn`t deserve an Oscar. Shame on the Academy for planning on presenting Oprah with an undeserved Oscar. Is the Academy so desperate for publicity?
