Judyth Piazza interviews David Budbill, Author of Happy Life
David Budbill`s newest book of poems, Happy Life, was published by Copper Canyon Press in August of 2011.
His latest play, A Song for My Father, premiered at Lost Nation Theatre in Montpelier,Vermont, in the spring of 2010, and received a second production at Old CastleTheatre Company in Bennington, VT, in August and September of 2010.
David`s last two Copper Canyon Press books of poems were While We`ve Still Got Feet(2005) and Moment to Moment: Poems of aMountain Recluse (1999).
Garrison Keillor reads frequently from David`s poems on NPR`s The Writer`s Almanac.
Davidreceived his first Honorary Doctor ofHumane Letters from New England College, in Henniker, New Hampshire, in January2009.
In1999, Chelsea Green Publishing Company republished a revised, expanded versionof Judevine, his collected narrative poems.
Judevine, the play, has now had 65 productions in 22 states since the early 1980s. Among Budbill`s other plays are Little Acts of Kindness, Thingy World!, Two for Christmas and his newest, A Song for My Father.
On October 6th, for the breadth and depth of his work, in all its forms, and the openness and generosity of spiritdemonstrated in that work, Pennsylvania State University/Altoona will present David Budbill with the 2011 Kjell Meling Memorial Award for Distinction in the Arts & Humanities. A dinner will precede the award ceremony, around 6:00 p.m. after which David will talk about and perform his work.
David`s other prizes and honors include: a Guggenheim Fellowship in Poetry in 1981, a National Endowment for the Arts Play Writing Fellowship in 1991, The Dorothy Canfield Fisher Award for Fictionin 1978, and The Vermont Arts Council`s Walter Cerf Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts in 2002.
His next book of poems, Park Songs, will be published by Exterminating Angel Press in December of 2012.
