The Power of Prayer is Key to Getting Closer to God

By Ron G Anselm

People that are true Christians and are committed to being close to God know that prayer is essential. In not only in today`s world but in life people need to realize they cannot get through life alone, they need God.

With everything that we all have been through over the past few years and for the ones that are still going through bad times as a result of the collapse of the economy or other reasons, you need a higher power to restore your hope in life amongst everything else.

The thought of believing in God is not just out there to give us hope but to know that God is real. God listens to prayers and answers them if those prayers are in his will. Of course if you pray to hit the lottery or become rich that prayer may not get answered or may not get answered very quickly. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective. (James 5:16-18)

I can say that I am a good example of what God can do through believing and prayer. I grew up tough and on my own at a very young age. I went through many hard times and even shifted at times to the wrong side of the law. The military was one turning point in my life that straightened me out and gave me hope, my family was the next turning point and then most of all God was my third turning point in my life.

I used to think that you could get through life alone without God or prayer. I was quickly wrong. I have had many good things happen lately in my life that could have only been through prayer and believing in God.

Learning to trust in prayer and God was not an easy and overnight task for me. It took many trials and going through things to make me gain my trust in prayer and God. I had to first learn to have faith no matter what I was going through. Jesus taught, "I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, `Move from here to there` and it will move. "Nothing will be impossible for you" (Matthew 17:20). You don`t have to have tons and tons of faith in God, from this statement from Jesus all you have to do is have enough faith as little as a mustard seed.

I know people who get frustrated when they pray and their prayers seem to go no higher than their ceiling. Remember, God hears every prayer we pray to him about, he knows this even before we pray it. He knows what is in our heart, our desires, our needs and our wants and God gives us what is best for us and gives us that in his time and when we need it. I had one prayer I prayed to God over twenty years ago and twenty years later the prayer was answered when I needed it to be answered and at the perfect time for it to be answered. So, yes; God will answer our prayers. Also, God will answer our prayers and the answer may not always be yes but the prayer will be answered and answered in the context of what is best for us. Remember, what you are going through now and it may seem there is no way you can get out of that bad situation you may be currently in but it first went through God before it made it to you and yes God will get you out of that bad situation and out of it in a better situation. Just pray and have faith in God.

The other thing I learned about prayer is how to pray. You don`t have to be in a certain position to pray or talk to God in a certain way, just talk to God like he is your best friend because he is. In fact, Jesus rebukes those who pray using repetitions, "And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him" (Matthew 6:7-8)

Prayer is communicating with God. All you have to do is ask God for His help. Psalm 107:28-30 reminds us, "Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress. He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven." There is power in prayer! When you pray you should also ask for forgiveness of your sins first. You should confess your sins then talk to God in your own words.

Also, going to a good bible based church is also the key to getting closer and developing a great relationship with God. I have met some of the most loving and caring people by going to church. It`s a great experience.

In today`s times and world we all need a sense of hope and a shoulder to lean on. God is that shoulder. Try praying and getting closer to God, your life will change for the better.
