Judyth Piazza interviews Torin Lee, President of Good Gear
In 2011, Good Gear was purchased by Torin Lee. We will continue the legacy of our founder by creating gear that supports our customers active lifestyles, while being environmentally friendly.
Torin is a communications professional and entrepreneurer (co-founder of several businesses, most recently CatchFly, LLC), who after some serious health scares in her twenties, began a renewed focus on health and fitness. She has lived in southern California, Boulder, Colorado, Washington DC - and now resides in Connecticut.
"I believe we all have the abillity to chose the life we want; and then become the person who leads that life, " said Torin. "Good Gear is this in practice - it is allowing me to feel good about my business and my gear."
We Love Bamboo
We chose bamboo for our sports gear because it feels as soft as silk, but it is durable, breathable, looks good and is good for the environment! Bamboo fiber is softer than the softest cotton, has a natural sheen to the surface and feels similar to silk or cashmere. But, it has a very high soil release value and is incredibly durable, making it a natural choice for athletes.
Due to bamboo fiber`s cross section which is composed of a matrix with various microscopic gaps, bamboo fiber is more breathable, comfortable and thermal regulating than cotton, wool or any other synthetic fiber thereby keeping you cooler, drier and more comfortable all day. This unique micro-structure allows bamboo apparel to absorb and evaporate perspiration faster than any other fabric. It`s nice not to have your clothes sticking to your skin in the hot summer or during exercise. Bamboo`s organic and natural fiber properties also make it non-irritating to the skin. It is a pleasant alternative for anyone with skin sensitivities or other allergies and dermatitis.
Good Gear Bamboo Fabric
Good Gear gets its bamboo fabric from non-polluted Bamboo from Sichuan China. The bamboo fabric is certified and passes organic certifications OCIA/NOP. We use white bamboo charcoal to manufacture the Good Gear apparel. The bamboo charcoal is 4-year-old bamboo which contains 15%-18% water to dry it in the shade then carbonize it in a traditional kin at 800 degrees Celsius. After 10 days it becomes fine bamboo charcoal with a smooth surface. From there, the fiber is made of bamboo charcoal which is produced by clean carbon technology. The Bamboo charcoal is then ground into a powder and spun into a high quality fiber.
OCIA, Organic Crop Improvement Association: OCIA International is the oldest, largest trusted leaders in the organic certification industry.A non-profit, member owned, agricultural organization, OCIS is dedicated to providing the highest quality organic certification services and access to global organic markets.
NOA, National Organic Program: The National Organic Program (NOP) develops, implements, and administers national production, handling, and labeling standards for organic agricultural products. The NOP also accredits the certifying agents (foreign and domestic) who inspect organic production and handling operations to certify that they meet USDA.We hope you will take a moment to explore our apparel and learn a bit about bamboo.
