Students Build Writing Skills with Help of USF Polytechnic Tutoring Team

By SOP newswire2

Good writing means more than making simple revisions, adding citations or running a computer`s spell check. Students at the University of South Florida Polytechnic can now tap into an expert to help fine tune their writing skills with the recent expansion of its tutoring services.

Lauren Anderson has joined the USF Polytechnic tutoring team and aims to help students review papers, brainstorm ideas, and make suggestions for improvements on a variety of writing projects.  Funded by the Student Government, tutoring is one of many academic support services USF Poly offers and is likely one of the most well received, said Dr. Jan Lloyd, acting assistant vice chancellor for student affairs and dean of students.

"Tutoring is the kind of service that has a direct benefit to students and can even mean the difference between passing and failing a course," she said. "Our students asked for this service, so we`re really pleased to be able to meet their needs. And we really like to see academic support services like this grow."

In addition to Anderson and her writing expertise, tutoring services include math and statistics tutoring from Dr. Tom Ricard. He`s nearly a hero to many students, including Sylvia Blanco, a senior in the early childhood development program who receives help with algebra from Ricard.

"Dr. Ricard is very good at explaining everything step by step," Blanco said. "I live in Hillsborough Country and will drive for this tutor. He`s made such a difference to me with this algebra class."

Both tutors will meet with students on a walk-in basis or with scheduled appointments. Ricard`s office is in the Open Use Lab/Library and his hours are 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday.
