Judyth Piazza interviews International Poker Hostess Gloria Balding
With a combination of charm, style and expertise, Gloria Balding is has become perhaps the best presenter in Poker today. As an International Poker Hostess, Balding has interviewed the greatest poker players from around the world and has covered the World Series of Poker every year since 2006 and has even played in a few live tournaments herself.
But Gloria Balding did not achieve all this success by accident nor did she? In 2006, Gloria was roommates with this girl who was handling Bluff Magazine`s radio coverage for some poker tournaments and happened to be at their office to visit her and it turns out, Bluff was short staffed that day and they needed help with some administrative work. Gloria typed up a contact list and Nick Geber gave her a job right then and there.
Before long, Gloria was producing video content for Bluff Magazine. Previously, Gloria had worked as an actress/model, but was getting bored and wanted to get into producing. After the 2006 World Series, Gloria was offered a full time gig by Bluff, producing and creating web content for the magazine and working as an occasional on-air host.
Hosting was something which became second nature to Gloria as her curiosity and intelligence made this the next logical step in her career. "I love talking to people from all walks of life. I like introducing people to viewers that they may not see get to know otherwise. At the end of the day, I just like to ask questions," said Gloria. "I look forward to taking my hosting chops I`ve gained to the next level."
After two years at Bluff, Gloria was approached by PokerNews to host for them and the rest is history. For PokerNews, Gloria traveled across the United States, Europe and Asia, 40 plus weeks a year, covering the worlds biggest and most exciting poker tournaments.
Gloria proudly boasts, "I`ve seen some sights that are awesome and can say, I`ve been to most countries that have poker tournaments. I`m a foodie at heart, so being able to travel and eat local specialties has been awesome. I`ve had beignets in New Orleans, Dim Sum in Macau and crepe in Cannes. I`ve been to every continent but Antarctica. I can`t complain."
Even though she is considered a fixture a poker tournaments across the globe, there is some much more to Gloria. She was born in Eugene, OR, but grew up in Phoenix, Arizona. After graduating from high school, she went to New York to study at the Academy of Dramatic Arts where she studied ballet and classical theatre. But Gloria`s real passion is history. As a kid growing, she was always a book worm, as early as 6 years old; she was reading military history magazines. She has a bachelor`s degree in International Relations and a minor in Military History from American Military University. By 2013, Gloria plans to have completed her masters in Military History.
As for Gloria`s future, she`s looking forward to doing more work in mainstream media and not being exclusive to poker. Producing and hosting programs for the Military or the History Channel would be a dream job for Gloria and with savvy smarts, this goal should not be too far in the future.
