The Stick of Prayers

The Stick of Prayers

By Ed Roberts

The Stick of Prayers

In times of need

In times of joy

Our shaman takes a stick from the forest

He anoints it with spices

And special oils

Given to us by our creator

He holds this stick next to his chest

And speaks in silent words

That the stick absorbs

Directly from his heart

The stick is passed

One by one

Hand to hand

Chest to chest

Heart to heart

To all who are in need

Then the stick is once again given back to our shaman

Who leads us to a special place

Where he has built a fire

Into the flames

He carefully places our prayer stick

As the stick burns

Our prayers are carried by the smoke

Carried up into the heavens

Where they are breathed in

By the Great Spirit

In this way

We all become

One

Ed Roberts

Many people wonder why we burn incense and candles with our prayers

We have done this long before any words were ever written
