Disgraced Bishop Eddie Long Apologizes To Jewish Group
"Bishop Eddie Long has apologized for last Sunday`s service at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church that drew the ire of Jewish groups and religious scholars.
`The ceremony was not my suggestion, nor was it my intent, to participate in any ritual that is offensive in any manner to the Jewish community,` Long wrote in a letter sent Saturday to Bill Nigut, Southeast Regional Director of the Anti-Defamation League."
You don`t have to be a rocket scientist or a Talmud scholar to realize that every aspect of outrageous ritual was offensive to the religious community in general and to the Jewish people in particular.
A faux ritual performed be a faux rabbi is patently offensive. To declare that a scandal-plagued pastor is a king is an abomination. To make the false claim that the scroll used in the absurd ceremony "may still have the dust of Auschwitz" is an outrage. To wrap Long in the sacred scroll is an insult to the Jewish people.
At any point in this spectacle Bishop Eddie Long could have come to his senses, and put a stop to the nonsense. But the reverend was having too much fun being carried around in a throne before his adoring congregation.
Eddie Long`s apology is insincere and self-serving, and the Anti-Defamation League should have rejected it out of hand. If Long were sincere he would act like a servant instead of a king, and minister to the poor that are languishing in the vicinity of his opulent church.
