George's Night Club Re-Opens With A Touch of Class

George's Night Club Re-Opens With A Touch of Class

By Mimi Amaral

From 1977 to 2003 George`s night club was owned and successfully ran by many people under the name New Georges.  New Georges night club welcomed many musical greats such as: The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Santana, Huey Lewis and the News, Bonnie Raitt, Electric Light Orchestra, Vinyl, Chris Isaac, Melissa Etheridge, Mr. Big and Pride and Joy. Unfortunately, in 2003 New Georges was shut down and Marin County lost a historically known venue for musical talent and expression.

Eric 1 Georges Gig lead singer Mr. BigIn 2010 Todd Ghanizadeh recognized the tragedy in the closure of New Georges and decided to re-open the night club under the name George`s Nightclub. When asked what inspired him to re-open the nightclub Todd responded, Everyday on my way to work I wondered who would step up in Marin and bring back this historic venue. I was not thrilled with the dive bar and no live music scene in Marin.

"I decided that I would like to go back to the 1940`s where music and nightlife was more civilized, like a social meeting event not just a pick up bar."  This thought inspired Todd to go to his father, Teo Ghanizadeh, who is an investor and request his input on how to re-open the nightclub.

Bar 2 at Georges Todd envisioned the nightclub being a mix between what New Georges once was, with a touch of House of Blues and the famous Jazz Bar in England called Ronny Scott`s.  George`s décor is a blue steel with stainless steel tables, two bars with glass and lights to illuminate the booze, which reflects the 40s era of the Cotton Club.  However, this is not the only attributes of George`s nightclub; the club also has a full kitchen with a menu consisting of: hamburgers, kabobs, chicken satay, salad, cheesecake and much more.  The staff is young, attentive and friendly, which enhances the already positive and upbeat atmosphere of the nightclub.

Georges menu and drinkTodd aspires to make George`s as capacious as it once was so he may book bigger national acts as well as support local Bay Area talent by packing the house with people who love night life and music. Bands that have recently appeared at Georges are: Eric Martin band (lead singer of Mr. Big), Carlos Santana, Pablo Cruise, Pete Escovedo, Pride and Joy, Roy Rogers, Tommy Castro, Danny Click, Bonnie Hayes, Scoot Cappuro, Will Durst, The Tubes, Petty Theft, Wonderbread 5, Superdiamond, Tony Saunders, John Santos, Ray Obiedo, and Tommy Castro.  However, Todd would really enjoy booking The Tubes, War, James Cotton, Bonnie Raite, Huey Lewis, Pat Benetar and many more, but to do this George`s nightclub needs to pack the house and this is where getting the word out that the club is alive and kicking will help.  George`s night club also hosts fundraisers and has worked with the Marin Abused Women Center, The San Rafael School District; Little Kids Rock fundraiser starring Shelby Lynn and events for multiple High Schools and primary schools.

Bar 1 at GeorgesGeorge`s Nightclub is a family owned business and Todd feels it`s all about making his customers feel comfortable and at home: "It`s all about personal relationships and at the end of the day that makes a venue comfortable."
