Kid Steals Skateboard, Mom Makes Him Hold Up 'I'm A Thief" Sign
"A California teenager caught stealing a skateboard at school says he was forced by his mother to stand at a busy corner with a sign saying `I am a thief.`
The 17-year-old, identified only as Justin, was caught stealing a skateboard at La Canada High School, the La Canada Valley Sun reported. The school called his mother but did not involve police."
The poor kid had to stand for 15 minutes near a shopping center, where he would be sure to be seen by a lot of kids, with a sign that read: My name is Justin and I am a thief.
The young man took his punishment in stride declaring "It`s my 15 minutes of shame." But if somebody captured his humiliating experience on video and posted it on YouTube it may turn out to be his 15 minutes of fame. We live in a culture that celebrates the weird and the shameful.
I commend the mother for taking her son`s transgression seriously, but I don`t agree with the punishment. She is teaching her son that the way to achieve your goals is by humiliating others. There are many ways that the mother could have punished Justin: Made him buy a skateboard and have him donate it to a Goodwill store; taken away his allowance for a month (do kids still get allowance?), taken away his cell phone for a week (that would hurt)...
But I doubt the kid will be stealing anything else anytime soon.
