Woman, 100, Serves As Reading Tutor! Bless Senior Citizens!

By Robert Paul Reyes

"The oldest reading tutor in Utah said she does not plan to let her 100th birthday stop her from working with children.

Gaitha Woosley Butterfield, who is known as Grandma Butterfield at Green Acres Elementary in North Ogden, said having topped the century mark last Wednesday will not slow down her twice-a-week volunteer efforts teaching children at the school to read."

The elderly are warehoused, out of sight and out of mind, in rest homes and convalescent centers. But senior citizens can make valuable contributions to society, witness this 100-year-old lady who volunteers teaching children how to read.

I often hear people say, "I would love to volunteer somewhere, but I have no skills and I don`t know how to help", well you can read, can`t you? Teach children at an elementary school or immigrants at an adult school how to read.

Everybody should volunteer somewhere, come on folks: No excuses. If a 100-year-old lady can serve as a reading tutor, we should be able to do something to make this a better world.
