Outrage: Why Are We Paying For Newt Gingrich's Secret Service Detail?

By Robert Paul Reyes

"Even though by his own estimation he has very little prospect of winning the Republican nomination, Newt Gingrich is still likely costing the taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars a day with his Secret Service detail on the campaign trail."

I have as much chance of dunking over LeBron James as Newt Gingrich has of jumping one inch off the ground or winning the Republican nomination for President.

It`s an outrage that the American public is subsidizing Gingrich`s presidential campaign/book tour. The former Speaker of the house is a millionaire many times over, and he can afford to pay for his own protection.

The Secret Service detail is almost as large as the "crowds" that gather to hear Newt`s stump speech; Newt`s vanity is depleting our treasury.

Rep. Ron Paul is also involved in a Quixotic quest for the presidency, but at least he`s not letting taxpayers foot the bill for his bodyguards.

The Secret Service has better things to do with their time: They have hooker parties to organize, and beer runs to make.

A presidential candidate should only be protected by the Secret Service, if he has a realistic chance of winning or if credible threats have been made against him.
