An Enquiry into the influence of Pro-Israel Lobbyists on UK / EU Government Policy

By SOP newswire2

LABOUR MP Jeremy Corbyn is backing the call for a public enquiry into the influence of pro-Israel lobbying groups on British government policy.

We have already seen the tip of this dangerous political iceberg in the forced resignation of the previous Defense Minister owing to the disclosure of his close political and social relationships, with powerful pro-Israel lobbyists, that violated the ministerial code.

The official line of the British government in regard to Israel`s house demolitions and settlement construction is clear: they are illegal under international law, an obstacle to peace and constitute a threat to a two-state solution. All settlement activity, including in East Jerusalem, should cease immediately. The government has made clear its concerns to the Israeli authorities, both bilaterally and with EU partners, and continues to do so.

The UK government consistently calls upon Israel to join the Nuclear NON Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and to agree a full scope Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Its objective is to achieve a Middle East free from Weapons of Mass Destruction.

Unfortunately, in spite of these facts, the Israeli government takes no remedial action.

It is in this context that it is vital to ascertain the level of activity and influence that Israeli lobbyists exert upon the government. The way to examine this extremely serious issue, in depth, is for a public enquiry to elicit the facts as a matter of importance for the UK, the EU and world peace.
