Ohio Prisoners Form 'Real Men Crochet' Group

By Robert Paul Reyes

"A group of 15 inmates at an Ohio maximum security prison have joined a `Real Men Crochet` program to make mittens, hats and other items for charity.

Jan Vurginac, who coordinates the program for prisoners at Lebanon Correctional Institution in Warren County, said the club started in 2008 and has since gained popularity among inmates eligible for extra privileges, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported Wednesday."

I don`t think the crochet circle will be mocked by the other prisoners, a crochet hook is an intimidating weapon. Whenever I see a granny crocheting socks for a baby, I give the old bat a wide berth.

I`d much rather see prisoners crocheting sweaters and mittens than making weapons or hooch. This wholesome activity keeps prisoners busy and out of trouble.

Plus it`s for a good cause, the items made by the cons are donated to homeless shelters and maternity programs.

I never thought a bunch of cons would provide fodder for a heartwarming story.
