Comprehend: Do You Understand?

Comprehend: Do You Understand?

By Keith Johnson

The SOP Word of the Day: Comprehend

The word COMPREHEND means, literally, "to grasp" in the sense of understanding. So, if you COMPREHEND the meaning of a word or expression, this means you have successfully understood (e.g. grasped) its meaning and meaning in that specific context.

Example: If you do not comprehend the meaning of these stories, then you will not make a good lawyer.

Example: If you comprehend the meaning of these Sumerian tablets, then we can decode them and write a book about the story that has been told. Still need clarification? Let me give a short story using this word.

A student named Tony always had a tough time in mathematics. He always asked his teacher questions, but he failed to comprehend the "how" and "why" of mathematical formulas and reasoning. So, his teacher gave him a task to do in his free time. The teacher said "Tony, you will understand mathematics after you build this model airplane.

Follow the instructions, and use your tape measure, calculator, and weighing device at home to make sure every step is followed correctly. Then, you can take your model airplane for a test flight." So, Tony diid exactly as his teacher instructed. Finally, he was able to comprehend how mathematics applies to our lives and he was able to comprehend mathematical formulas and reasoning.
