Ex-NFL Player Out Of The Closet! Profile In Courage -- Not!

By Robert Paul Reyes

"Wade Davis works at the Hetrick-Martin Institute, which serves lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or questioning youth in New York.

If it seems like a unique occupation for a former NFL player, it probably is ... especially since Davis is one of those rare ex-players who`s come out of the closet."

Football is a brutal game, and football players have a reputation for being the most macho athletes, but it`s amazing that there hasn`t been one football star man enough to come out of the closet while he was still playing.

Wade Davis is a complete unknown, he wasn`t good enough to make the regular season roster of any NFL team. He didn`t have the talent to make an impact on the gridiron, but if he had come out while he was still playing he would have made a tremendous impact on the culture.

I commend Davis for his tireless work serving gay youth in New York, but he`s no profile in courage. Nobody cares about a player who wasn`t good enough to make it in the NFL, his coming out, this late in the game, will have zero impact.

I challenge gay baseball, football, and basketball stars to come out of the closet: Man Up!
