Simon Says Find Your Spark
When you find your spark, it sets in motion a series of events, circumstances, situations, and chance encounters that I like to call "living in the flow." But how does a person find his or her spark? Aristotle said, "Where the needs of the world intersect with your talent [gifts, ability, skill, and competence] therein lies your vocation [your flow or purpose]."
Your purpose is not about whether you are a "fit" or a misfit. Your purpose is tied to a need or void in the world. The fact is, you are here to meet a need of someone or something. If you look to fill a void in the world, your purpose for existence will manifest itself - and that will make you the right person in the right place at the right time. In other words, it will make you the right fit.
When I discovered the simple truth that I exist at this period in history to do one particular thing - inspire, instill, and infuse hope in other human beings - I stopped attempting to be like everyone else. I quit trying to find my way by mimicking others, and that`s when I found myself. I had lost me for a moment because I thought I had to say everything just right to make others like me because that`s what the experts said. They were wrong! Vujá dé, baby!
It`s time for you to vujá dé every facet of your life where there is no spark: dead-end relationships that are emotionally anemic; jobs that suck the life out of you and send you to an early death; friendships that are liabilities instead of assets; and old ways of thinking that keep your potential bound up in a straitjacket.
A spark is a quality or talent that unleashes your energy and joy. When you are investing your ability into something meaningful and congruent with your internal wiring, it creates a spark. You become the match that starts a fire that spreads quickly from person to person, situation to situation, and opportunity to opportunity.
When you find your inner spark, it allows your mojo, your essence, and your swag to fill a room. Why? Simply put, you are no longer in the room; the room is in you. And when you recognize that fact, you become present to the moment. You realize that you exist to give instead of get. Your spark becomes the push, the nudge, the shove that everyone needs as time slips into the future.
Bruce Barton, one of the founders of BBDO, one of the nation`s largest advertising agencies, said it best: "If you have anything really valuable to contribute to the world, it will come through the expression of your personality, that single spark of divinity that sets you off and makes you different from every other living creature."
Where there is no spark, there is no joy. Where there is no joy, there is no hope, and where there is no hope, there is no passion. Without passion, a job is just a job. A marriage is just two roommates sleeping in the same bed, sharing bills while living under the same roof. A business is simply something do instead of something that makes a difference in the world. But when you find your spark, you find your joy, and when you find your joy, you find freedom. And when you find freedom, you find your chutzpah.
Be the spark. Create the spark. Get moving and, for goodness sake, don`t stay stuck on a bridge to nowhere! Somewhere in the world, someone or something needs you to wake up and shift.
Here are three questions to help you find your spark:
1. Who or what do I have passion for?
2. Where can I make a significant difference?
3. What needs in the world upset me the most?
I know that you were probably waiting for me to give you the three to five steps. However, the Socratic method of learning is based on asking and answering questions to stimulate one`s critical thinking skills and illuminate ideas or spark a thought.
The answer you are looking for, O, Brilliant One (that would be you), is in the question.
