Dr. Noor Jehan Appointed ICU Vice Chancellor amidst Voices of Concern

By SOP newswire

The provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has appointed Dr. Noor Jehan as the new acting Vice Chancellor of the Islamia College University (ICU), Peshawar, Pakistan. The announcement from the Higher Education Department of the province was made yesterday against voices of concern which regard the appointment as violation of rules and a case of favoritism.

According to the Urdu daily Mashriq, July 25th edition, Dr. Noor Jehan is the first female doctorate degree winner in the country in the field of Environmental and Medical Geology and has 26 research publications to her credit in national and international journals. She has also won a number of distinctions and awards on national and international levels. Previously, she was serving as the chairperson of the Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Peshawar.

The news of Dr. Noor Jehan`s appointment as the VC of ICU has evoked bitter criticism on social media. A facebook group Kick out Girls Hunters Faculty from Peshawar University has posted an image of Dr. Jehan along with that of the provincial Information Minister Mian Iftikhar and Canadian Immigration monogram. The text in the image claims that Dr. Jehan has been appointed VC of ICU due to her affair with the Information Minister and that she is a Canadian national as well as a junior faculty member at the university.

Earlier this month, a news post about the same issue conveyed that the provincial government of the Awami national Party (ANP) had plans to appoint Dr. Jehan as ICU`s new VC because the senior faculty members, who deserved to occupy the VC office on basis of seniority were kept from the position because they belonged to a rival political party.
