Male Flight Attendant, 83, Retires After 63 Years Of Service

By Robert Paul Reyes

"A Hawaiian man who went to work for United Airlines as a flight attendant when Harry Truman was president is hanging up his wings.

Ron Akana, 83, who now lives in Boulder, Colo., is to retire Sunday after one last flight to Honolulu, the Boulder Daily Camera reported. He will be crew chief and his wife, son, daughter and grandson will all be on the plane."

I applaud Ron Akana for his dedication to his career, but with all due respect there should be a mandatory retirement age of 65 for flight attendants.

Flight attendants don`t just serve you drinks and pretzels, they can be critical in an emergency. Let`s get real, in an emergency an 83-year-old man will just get in the way.

I don`t expect every flight attendant to look like an actress, but for God`s sake I don`t want to be served by a man who is older than dirt.

Akana probably can`t hear the call service button, and if he does, by the time he gets to your seat, your plane will have landed.

Congratulations Mr. Akana, but for the love of God, I hope there aren`t any other old coots serving as flight attendants.
