"When a big-name performance sings the The Star-Spangled Banner at a sporting event, there are only two ways to react: love or hate. Usually, it`s clear which side everyone is on. Whitney Houston: love. The Fray: hate.
Queen Latifah`s up-tempo, jazzy rendition ).at the NFL`s season opener on Wednesday night ((reminiscent of the one she performed last year at the U.S. Open on the 10th anniversary of 9/11) elicited the usual passionate reactions, but they seemed to be properly split down the middle."
We can forgive the delegates for booing God at the Democratic National Convention, but we will never forgive or forget Queen Latifah for butchering "The Star-Spangled Banner." Queen Latifah`s version of the National Anthem was an execrable and histrionic mess. Latifah sounded like an American Idol contestant high on crack, but the only thing Latifah was high on was her huge ego.
A singer of her caliber is allowed to try out a new arrangement for a song like "You Light up My Life.", but it`s blasphemy to mess around with the National Anthem.
A crooner`s sole motivation for singing the National Anthem should be to honor America, not to show off her prowess as a singer.
Shame on Queen Latifah, she shall forever be anathema to me.
