Maha Kumbh Mela: Largest Religious Hindu Festival Takes Place

Millions of devotees are taking part in the Maha Kumbh Mela, the largest religious Hindu festival, which started on Monday at Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh.

Maha Kumbh Mela is mass Hindu pilgrimage of 55 days held once in 12 years in which millions of pilgrims come from different places all over the world. The biggest day of all is when 20 million people are anticipated for "Basant Panchami" on February 15.

"The constant chants of songs, slogans and prayers purify the atmosphere and makes it a more serene place," an Indian newspaper quoted a devotee as saying. "The event inclined me towards a more spiritual side," she said.

According to the reports, this year, the local government has spent over 1.17crores to ensure all the arrangements. The mela is estimated to draw around one million devotees and for this tight security arrangements and measures have taken care of to deal with any terror activity, drowning or stampede.

The mega Holy event also marked the presence of Indian Bollywood actress, Shilpa Shetty who took a Holy dip on the first day of the Maha Kumbh. Many Hollywood celebrities like Catherine Zeta-Jones, Michael Douglas, Richard Gere and American filmmaker David Lynch, are likely to visit this mega event this year.
