Indian government on Saturday morning executed Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru in Delhi`s Tihar jail here. Reports said that after the President gave it his assent on January 26 to hang the guru, the centre government formed a secret plan to send the Guru to the gallows.
Mohammed Afzal Guru, from Kashmir was given the death sentence by the Supreme Court in 2004. His hanging, scheduled for October 2006, was suspended or stayed after his wife filed a mercy petition on his behalf.
Union Home Secretary RK Singh confirms early on National television, that Afzal Guru was hanged in Tihar jail at . He said that it is not a political move, but the `law has taken its course`. President Pranab Mukherjee rejected Afzal Guru`s mercy petition on 3 February. He was buried inside the prison complex soon after his execution, he said.
Singh added Guru`s family back in Kashmir were informed about his execution. "They (Tihar jail authorities) intimated the family through Speed Post, registered post and the DG (director general of Jammu and Kashmir Police) has been told to check with the family whether they got it or not," Singh told reporters in New Delhi
Meanwhile, curfew was imposed across Kashmir. According to the police numbers at least 40 persons were injured when police and paramilitary forces opened fire on protestors at his hometown Sopore and Baramulla.
