Indian Government Unlikely to Return Afzal Guru's Body to Family

By Neha Gandhi

Amid growing tensions in the Kashmir valley, over the execution of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru in a secret operation in New Delhi`s Tihar jail on February 9, the Indian Government is unlikely to return the body to his family members.

CNN-IBN news, on Monday quoted government sources as saying that the government is wary of a fragile situation erupting in Jammu and Kashmir if his body is handed over to his family. "Government is open to the option of Afzal Guru`s family visiting the Tihar jail and paying their respects to him. But changes are rare that body would be returned to the family in Kashmir," report said.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister of India, Dr. Manmohan Singh passes on the decision over the body of Afzal Guru to Parliament. "Let the parliament discuss whether the body of Afzal Guru should be taken to Jammu and Kashmir as demanded by his family," Prime Minister said on Monday.

Pertinently, Dr. Singh earlier slammed the home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde over the delay in informing the family over the execution and asked why the required process was not followed.

Earlier, in a letter addressed to home ministry, Afzal`s wife Tabassum, said she had full right over his body and demanded that the mortal remains be handed over to her for "proper burial" in his home state of Jammu and Kashmir.
