Outrage: University Student Suspended For Refusing To Step On Jesus

By Robert Paul Reyes

"A student at Florida Atlantic University said he was unfairly suspended from his Intercultural Communications class because he refused to step on Jesus.

Ryan Rotella, a junior from Coral Springs, said the incident began when his professor, Dr. Deandre Poole, asked students in the class to write the word "Jesus` on a piece of paper, fold it up, and step on it."

The school issued the following statement:

Faculty and students at academic institutions pursue knowledge and engage in open discourse. While at times the topics discussed may be sensitive, a university environment is a venue for such dialogue and debate. "

Rotella is a devout Mormon and he refused to disrespect Jesus. But it doesn`t matter if you believe in the divinity of Jesus or not, most of us would agree that the Jesus depicted in the Gospels is a man of peace worthy of respect and admiration.

I fail to understand what lesson Dr. Poole was trying to teach his students, but I`m convinced he would never instruct his students to write "Prophet Mohammed" on a piece of paper and step on it.

The cowardly Dr. Poole is fully aware that if he dissed Mohammed he would be putting his life in danger, but he knows that at worst Christians will fire off an angry letter to the editor.

Isn`t an "Intercultural Communications" class supposed to teach students to treat everyone with respect, regardless of their religion or ethnicity?
