The Associated Press Drops Term 'Illegal Immigrant'
"The Associated Press, the largest news-gathering outlet in the world, will no longer use the term "illegal immigrant."
The news came in the form of a blog entry authored by Senior Vice President and Executive Editor Kathleen Carroll on Tuesday afternoon, explaining that the decision is part of the company`s on-going attempt to rid their Stylebook of labels."
The term "illegal immigrant" or "illegal alien" should be relegated to the dustbin of history by all media outlets.
This abhorrent phrase is politically-incorrect, morally distasteful and linguistically inaccurate.
These hateful words strip persons of their humanity, and it becomes that much easier to exploit them and treat them as if they were less than human beings.
A lot of these hardworking undocumented workers are returning to land that was stolen from Mexico, to dismiss them as "illegal aliens" is especially odious considering this fact that`s often forgotten.
If an average person refers to undocumented workers as "illegal aliens" it`s unfortunate but forgivable, but when a reporter, who should be sensitive to the meanings of words, uses this outdated phrase it`s unforgiveable.
As an Hispanic whenever I hear a politician or a pundit use this pejorative term I immediately and automatically dismiss everything they have to say.
There is no such thing as an "illegal" human being, for God`s sake stop using the offensive term.
