Britain's Oldest Man Turns 110: Video

By Robert Paul Reyes

"Britain`s oldest man, who celebrated his 110th birthday with a glass of whiskey, says he does not know the cause of his longevity.

Ralph Tarrant of Sheffield, England, a father of two, grandfather of seven, great-grandfather of 11 and great-great-grandfather of three, celebrated his 110th birthday Sunday."

When an extremely old person celebrates a landmark birthday, he is usually asked the secret to his longevity.

Almost invariably he will respond with a platitude: I don`t sweat the small things; I always look on the bright side; when I take a licking, I just keep on ticking...

Or he will attribute his longevity to healthy lifestyle and abstaining from vices.

But Britain`s oldest gentleman is a down-to-earth bloke who freely admits that he doesn`t have a bloody clue why he`s lived so long. Ralph smoked until he was 70 and he still enjoys an occasional drink.

Ralph`s wife died in 2012 at the age of 102, they were married for 79 years. I would guess that sharing his life with his soul mate for so many years has kept him going.

Now that his wife is gone I hope that he has a dog or a cat to keep him company. Ralph isn`t confined in a rest home; he lives alone and still cooks for himself.

The elderly gentleman has earned that glass of whiskey; he`s an inspiration to us all.
