Hollywood lost another tough guy with the passing of Dennis Farina, who died from a blood clot in his lung Monday at the age of 69.

A former police officer, Farina has been known on the big and small screen for playing good guys and bad guys -- which includes the acclaimed NBC series Crime Story from director Michael Mann, who also executive produced Miami Vice.

He succeeded the late Jerry Orbach on Dick Wolf`s Law & Order as NYPD Detective Joe Fontana from 2004 to 2006, hosted Unsolved Mysteries on Lifetime in 2008, and was a regular on HBO`s Luck with Dustin Hoffman and Nick Nolte and had a recurring role on FOX`s New Girl.

Other notable roles includes Midnight Run with Robert DeNiro and Charles Grodin, Get Shorty with John Travolta and Gene Hackman, and That Old Feeling with Bette Midler.

Farina is survived by Marianne Cahill, his wife of 35 years, as well as three sons from his previous marriage to Patricia Farina (they divorced in 1980), and six grandchildren.
