Rock Icon Lou Reed Dead at 71

By Robert Paul Reyes

The Velvet Underground, featuring Lou Reed on vocals, was an art rock band that was together from 1964 through 1973. They released only five studio albums, none of which sold more than a few thousand copies.

But The Velvet Underground is considered one of the most important and influential rock bands in history.

After the breakup of the Velvet Underground, Lou Reed remained an influential artist for decades, right up to his death at age 71.

Reed had only one top 20 hit, "Walk on the Wild Side"  released in 1972, but his influence in rock music and the culture at large is incalculable.

Reed`s songs have been covered by R.E.M., Nirvana, Patti Smith and countless of garage bands.

Reed`s mastery of the guitar was surpassed only by his brilliant songwriting. Other rock legends made their name singing about fast cars and pretty girls, but Reed sang about heroin, transvestites, prostitution and the underbelly of New York City.

Reed`s albums were an amalgam of music, philosophy, literature, poetry and art!

RIP Lou Reed! We have lost an original and unique voice who spoke for millions!
