National Outrage: National Park Service Kills Playful Elk: Video
"After a YouTube video of an elk butting heads with an Asheville photographer in Great Smoky Mountains National Park went viral, the National Park Service euthanized the animal on Friday."
This is not the case of a wild animal running free in a suburban neighborhood. This elk was in his natural habitat, in a National Park created so that humans can enjoy wildlife.
The elk wasn`t butting heads with the photograph, as described in the UPI article. The beautiful and peaceful creature was gently nudging him out of curiosity, not insatiable bloodlust.
I give the photographer credit for keeping his cool, and not lashing out in anger at the elk. He`s a photographer capturing the elegance of the elk, not a hunter looking for a trophy.
Park officials tried to rationalize their murderous deed, by insisting that the animal has grown accustomed to receiving food from park visitors, and had to be euthanized for the safety of visitors and staff.
The morons who feed wild animals should be fined, and if their behavior doesn`t change the park should be closed, but under no circumstances should the elk have been murdered.
