Judyth Piazza Interviews Laura Derk About The Story of the CHRISTmas Scroll Ornaments

Story of the CHRISTmas scroll ornaments

My story begins with the Christmas of 1990. It was my husband`s and my desire to celebrate the Christmas holidays in such a way that our four children would have good memories similar to the ones we had when we were children. Decorating our home for the holiday season in 1990 was no different from any other year. However, as we were decorating our Christmas tree that year, my husband expressed his concern over the way Christmas had become so commercialized.

My husband liked having the home decorated and enjoyed the family activities that surrounded the holidays, but he felt the Christmas tree itself had nothing to do with the true meaning of Christmas. Without knowing it, I felt indirectly challenged by Joe to re-examine the use of our Christmas tree in our holiday celebration. He didn`t realize at that time, but the tree was something that brought back good memories for me. Each year my mother would put up our tree and decorate it with light, ornaments and tinsel.

Underneath it she would set up this wonderful Christmas village. I could enter into a world of my own and imagine what the different people were doing and where they were going. Something that once brought me comfort was now being challenged. I found peace, love and happiness in the little world that I had created under my mom`s Christmas tree.

As I went through this time of self-examination, I knew in my heart that my tree looked just like everyone else`s. I realized that I was still trying to mix the world`s view of Christmas with the true meaning of Christmas. My spirit was unsettled. This inner conflict was bringing confusion to my heart and soul. I wanted to honor Joe`s desire, but I also wanted a Christmas tree. I knew if my tree pleased the Lord it would also please my husband. I knew that God had called believers to be different and I wanted to be different and that included the way I was celebrating Christmas.

In my heart I knew Joe was right and so it was at that time I surrendered my tree to the Lord. Immediately I was inspired to become creative and decorate my tree in a way that would honor our Lord and Savior. I had not seen many ornaments that portrayed the true meaning of Christmas so I began thinking about what kind of ornaments would please the Lord. I wanted scripture and knew that the scriptures were once written on scrolls. It was from this idea that the scroll type ornament was developed.

The next year I bought a calligraphy pen set for myself and started creating ornaments to put on my tree. I used Bible verses that were on the different Christmas cards I had received. Friends of mine loved the scrolls and asked if I would make some for them. Many hours were spent writing the same verses over and over again on every scroll I handmade. A number of scrolls were donated to our church for their tree. It was there I 2  began to see how people reacted as they saw the scriptures hanging on the tree. I could also see for the first time how the tree could be used as a way to spread God`s Word.

In 1991, I decided to test market the scrolls at some local craft shows. At the same time I was doing research as to whether or not such a product existed on the market. Nowhere could I find a scroll ornament that could be used as a Christmas ornament. Could this actually be a patentable product? In the spring of 1992, I contacted Bronner`s CHRISTmas Wonderland in Frankenmuth, Michigan to see if they would be interested in carrying this product. They invited me to send a few samples for their review board. About three weeks later I received my first letter of rejection. At that stage of the product`s development, they felt the scroll looked too hand made for their store.

I began spending time in our local library looking for materials from different suppliers that would help enhance the look of the product. That fall I contacted a couple of Christian schools who were more than willing to help me by doing a school fundraiser. All money raised went towards materials that upgraded the quality of the scroll product. Finally in the spring of 1993, I resubmitted the scroll ornament to Bronner`s. They accepted the new scroll design and continue to carry our product to this day. On February 14, 1994 I received the first of two patents issued by the U.S. Government. Since then I have been granted both the Design and Utilitarian Patents.
