Outrage: A & E Suspends 'Duck Dynasty' Patriarch For His View On Gays
"It seems like, to me, a vagina as a man would be more desirable than a man`s anus. That`s just me. I`m just thinking: There`s more there! She`s got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I`m saying? But hey, sin: It`s not logical, my man. It`s just not logical."
These are not the well-thought out words of a Baptist theologian or an expert in Christian apologetics, they are the coarse and unfiltered comments of a self-styled evangelical redneck.
"Duck Dynasty" patriarch Phil Robertson has been suspended from filming the A & E reality series following publication of his politically-incorrect comments about gays in GQ magazine.
I am a strong supporter of gay rights, and I have been advocating in support of same-sex marriage for the 15 years that I`ve been posting my essays online, but I am appalled by A & E`s suspension of the reality star.
Phil Robertson, ineloquently and inartfully, expressed a view that is held by a majority of evangelicals, and he shouldn`t be punished for exercising his constitutionally protected freedom of expression.
Robertson isn`t a preacher, politician or pundit, he`s an entrepreneur, reality star and avowed redneck, and we shouldn`t be unduly bothered by anything he utters off-screen. You can`t expect a redneck to be politically-correct; with Robertson what you see is what you get.
A & E can do whatever they want with Robertson and the series, but it would be in their best interests and an affirmation of freedom of speech if they rescind their suspension of Robertson.
"Duck Dynasty" isn`t my cup of tea; it doesn`t have the camp aesthetic of "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo", (a show that I love) it`s just straight-up redneck tomfoolery. But I`m a strong believer in freedom of speech, and I hope A & E quickly reverses their unwise and un-American suspension of Robertson.
