Outrage: City Bans Little Boy's 'Little Free Library'! Video!

By Robert Paul Reyes

"A Kansas family was trying to share their love of reading with the entire town of Leawood when they built a free library in their front yard on Mother`s Day, but the city is forcing them to hide that love away.

The Collins family was told that their `Little Free Library` violates an ordinance that bans detached structures. Rather than pay the $25 per-day fine, they opted to put the library in the garage.

The Collins` Little Free Library is slightly larger than a mail box, it`s not an eyesore, and it provides a benefit to the community.

The motto of the Little Free Library is take a book, leave a book. "

The librarian, Spencer Collins, 9, is devastated that his family was forced to take down the library, and his is planning to address the city council in July.

In an age when kids would rather play video games, watch TV, or surf the Internet than read books, the government should be doing everything possible to encourage reading.

Leawood City officials should rethink their ordinance that bans detached structures on front lawns, especially if the structure is tiny. They should present Spencer Collins with a key to the city; he`s a scholar, a gentleman, and an asset to his community.
